27. Since φ(x,y,z,t) is a real-number field (and does not take just +1 and -1 values), we have divided by the magnitude of this field in the definition of p(z,t) . This "hardening" of the field works better to describe the pattern even at earlier times, when the field values do not yet correspond to their final equilibrium values.
