GC-MS analysis of the reaction mixture showed in most cases the nearly total conversion of 5 into the expected iodohydrine 6 and the presence of variable amounts of 2-iodopropanone. Products were purified by column chromatography (silica, hexane:ethyl acetate 95:5).
