We have found that the area of the O(1s)XPS feature depends on the phase of the surface O species (chemisorbed or oxidic). A 20-25% increase is consistently observed upon transformation of the chemisorbed species to oxide in our measurements. This effect is probably due to changes in the angular distribution of O(1s) electrons for the two phases and it has been employed as a correction factor in estimating O coverages, when the oxidic phase was present on the surface.
