    • Equation (2) is applicable to the liquid-hard-wall surface and is commonly accepted as being applicable to the liquid-vapor surface. However, it is not rigorously known to hold for the latter case, where capillary waves are present. See, for example, M. E. Fisher and P. J. Upton, Phys. Rev. Lett. 65, 2402 (1990). Although the capillary wave fluctuations have a small amplitude at the liquid-vapor surface, they are correlated over large distances across the interface. Thus a significant perturbation to Eq. (2) due to coupling between the surface fluctuations and the order parameter fluctuations is possible.
