    • Equation (1), as it stands, describes an acoustic or electromagnetic wave only when disorder varies slowly compared to the wavelength. However, the experience with other models, such as a model of pointlike scatterers (see, e.g., Ref. 10), shows that this condition is not essential: the specific properties of the model enters only via the mean free path l.

    • A more realistic assumption would be to allow for a finite correlation length in < μ ( r vec ) μ ( r vec prime ) > or to use discrete short-range scatterers. However, if one is not interested in the corrections to the speed of propagation c (i.e., in the real part of the self-energy Σ ), one can as well use the white-noise model.

    • In Ref. 14 the term < Iω ( r vec ) >2 was written as < Iω ( r vec ) > < Iω ( r vec prime ) >, which is essentially the same, since (for Δ r and < Iω ( r vec prime ) > coincide with high accuracy.

    • This is, admittedly, a somewhat arbitrary choice and other types of boundary conditions to the diffusion equation occur in the literature. The absence of unique boundary conditions for the diffusion equation is due to the fact that rigorous boundary conditions can be formulated only for the specific intensity (see, e.g., Ref. 1), rather than for the total intensity appearing in the diffusion equation.
