    • It is generally believed that triplet energy transfer to the carotenoid functions in vivo to prevent the sensitization of singlet oxygen formation; however, this role has not, to the best of our knowledge, been demonstrated in vivo. The carotenoidless R-26 is very sensitive to oxygen; however, the R26 strain is deficient in carotenoid biosynthesis, so carotenoid is absent both in the RC and the antenna, and the site of sensitivity has not been distinguished.
