    • Local-field effects can modify individual microscopic polarizabilities but do not change the symmetry of the susceptibility tensor, which is of importance in this paper. For quantifying individual microscopic polarizabilities, local-field effects should be considered (Ref. 15). As a point of interest, is noted that using the point dipole model (Ref. 16) for BN monolayers, microscopic local-field parameters are expected to change the apparent magnitude of ISHG by about 10% (assuming αzz=20 A ang ^ sup 3_, αxx=20 A ang ^ sup 3_, and surface densities of app 0.5 times 1014 molecules/cm2).

    • Because the angle of incidence used in this work is above the critical angle, the effect seen here is not due to the phase change from total internal reflection.
