    • In the tight-binding complex k band structure given in Y.C. Chang, Phys. Rev. B 25, 605 (1982), a band structure curve exists starting from around the X point valley into the band gap [e.g, Fig. 22 in their paper]. However, this curve is not the (Formula presented) bifurcation and cannot be used as the (Formula presented) state for the following reasons: (1) This curve always starts from the x valley for different materials, thus it is insensitive to the signs and values of (Formula presented) and (Formula presented) (2) Its k is complex, having both real and imaginary parts. (3) Its Bloch function has the characteristic (symmetries, etc.) of the x valley state, which is different from the (Formula presented) point electron+light hole states.
