Computer modeling of nucleation, growth, and templating in hydrothermal synthesis
-
Fundamental processes involved in hydrothermal synthesis are examined by using a range of computational techniques as an alternative approach to the understanding of the formation mechanism of microporous materials. It deserves to be emphasized the final conclusion of this study: the calculations have highlighted the importance of template-fragment interactions in solution and the importance of Coulombic effects in binding template-fragment nuclei.

A unified synthetic strategy to systematize the preparative chemistry of layered oxovanadium phosphates is presented. The synthetic approach is based on the idea that the resulting network in the final solid would essentially be controlled by the nature of the ionic aggregates present in the mother solution, which makes critical the control of the hydrolysis and condensation processes. The results are organized on the basis of two complementary models: the Partial Charge Model and the Valence Matching Principle. A comparative study of this family shows significant crystallochemical correlations with the radius of the guest cations.

A new synthetic procedure to isolate layered oxovanadium phosphates is described. The preparative method is based on the use as reagents of metals that act as reducing agents and countercations filling interlamellar sites. Ag, Cu and Zn derivatives are prepared as monophasic products with reasonable yield. The crystal structure of these new solids is also presented.
