    • The single ion Kondo temperature TK can be estimated from inelastic neutron scattering data (Refs. protect, Ref. 21, and protect, Ref. 23). In Ref. protect, Ref. 21, the sharp excitation seen at 12.5 meV in the ground state broadens, shifts, and loses peak intensity as temperature increases. Near 100 K a broad line, centered at 15 meV, and with a width of 15 meV (full width at half maximum) is observed; such a line shape is typical of a mixed valent compound with TK=180 K. [An analogous renormalization of line shape is observed in Cesub 3Bisub 4Ptsub 3 (Ref. protect, Ref. 24). At low temperatures a gap is evident, but by 100 K the line has broadened sufficiently that resembles lines observed in mixed valent metals with TK =300 K.] In Ref. protect, Ref. 23, the large widths of the J=0 → J=1 (40 meV) and J= case 5/2 → J= case 7/2 (20 meV) excitations seen at 40 and 115 meV also set upper limits on TK. The widths of these excitations are governed by [Truncated]
