    • S. J. Osborne et. al J. Chem. Phys. 102, 7317 (1995), recently presented data for the lifetime broadening of the C 1s level determined from XAS and XPS of CO in the gas phase. These data indicate that correlations among the valence electrons in the core-excited state act to minimize the interaction between the excited electron in the (Formula presented) resonance and the core hole, thus yielding a longer core-hole lifetime than for ionized CO, contrary to the assumptions employed in Refs. 39 and 17. On the other hand, the difference between the two situations was not a large percentage of the total width, thus lending support to our order-of-magnitude estimates.
