    • Although a detailed study of the dependences of the interlayer tunneling strengths (Formula presented) of the HTSC compounds on the different possible material characteristics seem to not exist at present, a possible dependence of such (Formula presented) on (Formula presented), the normal-state c direction electrical resistance between the (j, n) and the (j+1, n) layers, in the form (Formula presented) ∝((Formula presented)(Formula presented), could be proposed on the grounds of generic studies of superconducting tunneling couplings [see, e.g., K. K. Likarev, Rev. Mod. Phys. 51, 101 (1979)]. This dependence would lead to (Formula presented) /(Formula presented) =(Formula presented) /(Formula presented) in the case that the resistivities per unit length in the c direction of the two junctions were the same. This last assumption seems, in principle, to be rather appropriate for some HTSC compounds, as (Formula presented), in which the electrical properties of the different junctions seem to be quite similar. However, for the Y-123 the existence of the CuO conductive charge reservoirs located between the more separated layers will probably favor a value for (Formula presented) /(Formula presented) even closer to 1 that the (Formula presented) /(Formula presented) value (for the Y-123, (Formula presented) /(Formula presented) ≈2.5). Also, more complex screening mechanisms cannot be ruled out at the present state of knowledge. However, we note that the (Formula presented) /(Formula presented) =1 experimental data analysis presented in this paper would not change in an appreciable way if values 1⩽(Formula presented) /(Formula presented) ⩽10 are used instead.
