    • Here we are assuming only single atoms are mobile on the surface (single atoms are not seen in the STM images), and are taking the island capture numbers to be unity. Previous analyses have shown that taking the capture numbers to be unity would not change the functional dependence on temperature (or the derived activation energy), but can affect the overall magnitudes of the diffusion coefficients through a multiplicative factor by less than a factor of 10 [8,9].
