    • Microphase separated phases are also referred to as modulated or patterned phases. The different names tend to be used in describing different systems although the morphology of the phases is the same. They all have nonuniform density, that is to say their symmetry is that of a solid or a liquid-crystalline phase. The difference between the phases which appear under the above names, and solids and liquid crystals, is that generally the period of the modulation is in some sense large.
