    • The index of refraction of fused silica depends on the total volume change as well as on the change in the partial volume occupied by the oxygen ions. The relative contributions of the two causes vary with the nature of the process that induces the changes (see Ref. 10). Our results indicate that in laser-induced compaction the major contribution is that of an overall volume change.
