18. This was verified by bromocyclisation of the methyl ester 18a, followed by removal of bromine from the cyclised adduct. Comparison of this product with the expected product, methyl 2,4-dioxo-1,3-diazaspiro [4.4]nonane-6-carboxylate prepared via an independent route [18] indicated that they were not identical.
