    • 1H NMR spectrum for (±)-3a is more compelling: 6 phenyl proton resonances are observed with all but the 4 o-protons coincidentally overlapping between 7.56 and 7.67 ppm. The chemical shift differences between the individual resonances of the m- and p-protons is small. By contrast, the 4 o-protons, 2 of which are closest to the fullerenic methines in (±)-3a, exist as a pair of quasi-doublets centered at 8.29 and 8.68 ppm (Δδ = 0.39 ppm).
