By associating more than one field variable with each pixel, and allowing the field variables to vary continuously over a range, it is certainly possible to smooth out effects of the discrete pixel lattice.

Grain growth in thin films is treated with a 2D front-tracking simulation in which quasi-three-dimensional effects are included as amendments to the local curvature-migration velocity relationship. They show that under certain conditions, variations in elastic strain-energy density, resulting from elastic anisotropy, can determine the evolution of texture. They also demonstrate that plastic yielding, which depends on grain size, and also depends on crystallographic orientation in a different manner from elastic strain-energy density, can be important for determining the texture evolution.
