    • note
    • The process does not convert over 100% of the methane to diamond, of course. The average methane molecule collides 2.2 times (220%) with the hot filament on its way through the reactor. If only this collision was required to make diamond, the conversion efficiency would be 100%. While the processes involved are not completely understood, it is clear that some other things must take place. For example, atomic hydrogen must be produced at the hot filament and diffuse to the substrate to etch away any carbonaceous deposits that are not diamond. A considerable amount of such nondiamond carbon would be required to reduce the efficiency to only 4%.

    • 12C diamond flakes from a broken diamond anvil are also easy to cut in the same way.) Particularly convenient is the fact that the pieces merely separate instead of springing across the room as most materials would. The high bulk modulus of diamond assures that there is no elastic energy stored during the cutting process. It is also very easy to pick up the shards by touching them with the tip of a small (50 μm diam) pivot drill to transfer them to the DAC. They are also released easily into the gasket hole.

    • 13C diamond Raman signal is lost, but the best crystallographic orientation of the diamond anvils is also the most common and the easiest to polish, while worst orientation is the most difficult to prepare.
