Au is very susceptible to contamination due to its high solid-vapor interfacial free energy. The Au surface in this experiment had been exposed to air for 2 days-no cleaning steps were employed. Freshly evaporated or cleaned Au should have a low contact angle (<10°), and adhesion on a clean sample should be higher than on an uncleaned sample.
