The concentration of a trace species in the CIMS is less than the ambient concentration for two reasons. The sampled gas undergoes an expansion from ambient pressure to ∼25 Torr, the operating pressure of the CIMS. The ambient air is also further diluted by the addition of a flow of dry nitrogen to the CIMS which is typically 2-4 times greater than the flow of the sampled air.
