    • To my knowledge, one of the most complete sources on family firms to date is Pat Alcorn's Success and Survival in the Family-Owned Business (McGraw-Hill, 1982). This work is geared to a managerial audience and covers a broad range of issues from entrepreneurship to succession. Other classics in family businesses include: Harry Levinson's “Conflicts that Plague Family Businesses” (Harvard Business Review, March–April 1971); “Transferring Power in the Family Business” by Louis B. Barnes and Simon A. Hershon (Harvard Business Review, July–August 1976).

    • Readers who might be interested in a more theoretical treatment of the conflicts generated by institutional overlap are directed to Robert K. Merton's classic, Sociological Ambivalence and Other Essays (The Free Press, 1976). Another classic sociological work that deals with the nature and consequences of structural conflicts is Organizational Stress: Studies in Role Conflict and Ambiguity by Robert L. Kahn, Donald M. Wolfe, Robert P. Quinn, J. Diedrick Snoek, and Robert A. Rosenthal (John Wiley and Sons, 1964).
