The convention is adopted, common in sintering theory, of equating the mean curvature to the sum of the reciprocals of the principal radii of curvature, which is twice the value of the mean curvature defined in most treatments of differential geometry. The sign of κ is taken to be positive at any point x if the divergence of the surface normals at x is positive
