    • The enzyme assay revealed that the bacterium α-2,6-sialyltransferase catalyzes the transfer of sialic acid to a variety of monosaccharides. The relative transfer rate compared to lactose (100%) is as follows: methyl α-D-galactopyranoside (3.0%), methyl β-D-galactopyranoside (9,2%), methyl α-D-glucopyranoside (0.5%), methyl β-D-glucopyranoside (0.6%), methyl α-D-mannopyranoside (0.5%), methyl β-D-mannopyranoside (0.6%), and methyl α-D-N-acetylgalactosaminide (3.0%).
