    • Spin-polarized electron-energy-loss experiments have shown that both spin flip and nonflip are important. Equation (1) describes the attenuation of the spin currents due to inelastic scattering. As long as the energy losses are large enough so that the electron is lost from the measured elastic intensity the description by a spin-dependent mean free path is adequate. Spin-down electrons undergoing spin-flip scattering will appear as spin-up electrons in the inelastic background and vice versa.

    • The actual secondary-electron cascade is more complicated. An electron above the vacuum level undergoing inelastic scattering can still be emitted (at lower energy). Thus the relation P approx P0+ A is only an upper limit for the polarization. However, spin-flip scattering, which is not taken into account in this model, counteracts this reduction of P.
