    • After extensive work on this "anchoring" layer we found that the buildup and properties of multilayers on underivatized gold were similar to those on modified gold. This is probably due to extensive chemisorption of bromide ions onto gold, producing a negatively charged surface of high charge density in the same manner as the alkanethiol sulfonate.
