Zeeman splitting of surface scattered neutrons
-
Felcher GP, Adenwalla S, de Haan VO, Van Well AA: Zeeman splitting of surface scattered neutrons. Nature 1995, 377:409-410. A never before observed phenomenon is reported in a grazing incidence polarized neutron reflectometry experiment carried out in a magnetic field. Neutrons undergoing a spin-flip, on being reflected, exchange energy with the magnetic field (they make a transition between the Zeeman split levels of the neutron moment in the field) in a subtle inelastic process. The scale of the energy exchange is -0.25 μeV (the neutron Zeeman splitting in the 20 kV field), yet is easily measured because of the high-sensitivity of the grazing incidence geometry to the neutron energy.

Collective dynamics in water by high energy-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering
-
Sette F, Ruocco G, Krisch M, Bergmann U, Masciovecchio C, Mazzacurati V, Signorelli G, Verbeni R: Collective dynamics in water by high energy-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering. Phys Rev Lett 1995, 75:850-853. Ground breaking demonstration of the use of x-rays for studying meV energy excitations in condensed systems. In this case a 'fast-sound' mode was observed in liquid water which had been predicted from molecular dynamics. This mode had already been observed by neutrons. The x-ray measurement was able to extend the Q range over which the dispersion was measured and demonstrate, using an isotope effect, that the sound wave involved all of the water molecule and not just the hydrogen network. This work is opening a new chapter in the study of excitations in condensed systems using x-rays and has already led to vigorous debate in the literature.

Soft x-ray resonant magnetic scattering from a magnetically coupled Ag/Ni multilayer
-
Tonnerre JM, Sève L, Raoux D, Soulliè G, Rodmacq B, Wolfers P: Soft x-ray resonant magnetic scattering from a magnetically coupled Ag/Ni multilayer. Phys Rev Lett 1995, 75:740-743. Resonant magnetic scattering takes advantage of the large resonantly enhanced magnetic cross-section at the L- and M-absorption edges of a magnetic ion. The L-absorption edges of 3d transition metal ions are too low in energy to do useful crystallography, but the magnetic structure of multilayer heterostructures can be studied. This is a very nice example of such work used to study Ag/Ni multilayers. These authors also extend the analysis to extract spin and orbital moments in the same way as is possible from x-ray magnetic dichroism. In this case it is possible to differentiate between ferromagnetically and antiferromagnetically coupled moments. The spin and orbital moments are obtained from the real and imaginary parts of the anomalous contribution to the x-ray scattering length, f′ and f″ respectively, which are determined from the intensity and width, respectively, of the magnetic Bragg peaks. These appear in different regions of Q-space for the ferromagnetically and antiferromagnetically coupled moments respectively.

Experimental confirmation of the x-ray magnetic dichroism sum rules for iron and cobalt
-
Chen CT, Idzerda YU, Lin H-J, Smith NV, Meigs G, Chaban E, Ho GH, Pellegrin E, Sette F: Experimental confirmation of the x-ray magnetic dichroism sum rules for iron and cobalt Phys Rev Lett 1995, 75:152-155. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism takes advantage of the fact that the absorption of left and right circularly polarized photons is different when the absorbing process is not symmetric under time-reversal. Arguably the most useful application is to measure the magnetic moments of chemical species in solids. An extremely important development has been the derivation of sum rules (see [15,16]) allowing the orbital and spin components of the moment to be measured directly for a given chemical species. The verification of these sum rules has been controversial. These authors make careful absorption measurements in transmission geometry, removing a lot of earlier experimental uncertainties, and find excellent agreement with the proposed sum rules.

Europhys Lett 1995, 32:259-265. The dependence of the line-shape of x-ray absorption lines on the magnitude of the exchange field in a ferromagnetic material is pointed out. This information can be used to determine the nearest-neighbour spin-spin correlation function. This makes x-ray absorption measurements potentially a very pow-erful tool for measuring not only element specific on-site magnetic moments (using dichroism discussed above), but also the nearest-neighbour spin-spin interactions in magnetic materials.

Neutron studies of disordered alloys: A brief review/update
-
Moss SC: Neutron studies of disordered alloys: a brief review/update. Mat Res Soc Symp Proc 1995, 376:675-687. An excellent current overview of the field including some history, formalism and recent studies. These studies are becoming increasingly important since computer electronic-band structure calculations are becoming more sophisticated and capable of taking account of realistic distorted local structures.

60 crystal. The static and dynamic components of the disorder were separated by resolving the energy. A wide range of Q-space was sampled, point-by-point, using a triple-axis spectrometer. The results were in excellent agreement with those in [52], a powder diffraction study. The work by David et al. [52] was published before 1995, but is a powder-diffraction tour-de-force and rewards a careful reading.

Diffuse scattering from thin films with defects
-
Bahr D, Press W, Jebasinski R, Mantl S: Diffuse scattering from thin films with defects. Phys Rev B 1995, 51:12223-12227. Here it is demonstrated that grazing incidence diffraction yields significant information about defect densities as a function of depth below the surface of a thin film. The depth profiled is varied by changing the angle of incidence. The theory of Barabash and Krivoglaz (Barabash, RI and Krivoglaz MA: Static fluctuation waves and the scattering of x-rays or neutrons from defects in thin films and surface layers. Sov Phys Solid State 1987, 29:1768) is reviewed and experimentally verified by studying a model system, thus opening the way for future studies of real systems.

The structure of ice Ih from analysis of single-crystal neutron diffuse-scattering
-
Nield VM, Whitworth RW: The structure of ice Ih from analysis of single-crystal neutron diffuse-scattering. J Phys - Condens Matter 1995, 7:8259-8271. Remarkable as it may seem, the structure of the normal form of ice, Ih, has not been fully characterized, despite being studied since 1922 (the initial studies were by WH Bragg himself). This study uses a novel single crystal reverse Monte Carlo approach to model the diffuse scattering from a neutron single crystal experiment to reveal new insight into the arrangement of the water molecules which show significant disorder.
