Soc. 1985, 707, 708), would bind to N7 of guanine, which is readily accessible in the major groove, and then, as is inversion labile, yield a certain net excess of the A enantiomer preferentially formed (Pfeiffer effect) giving rise to a positive cotton effect. But the observation of a negative Cotton effect eliminates the possibility of a Pfeiffer effect. Further, all the other copper - phen complexes, particularly the 5-substituted complexes, which give viscosity effects similar to 5,6-dmp complex, do not exhibit such an inversion in CD spectra. This is consistent with the failure of the 5-substituted complexes to inhibit the enhancement in DNA-bound EthBr emission.
