    • Details of the cold cell have been published in detail previously (Ref. 8). The main features were a CsBr window enclosed in a vacuum-shroud and cooled by an Air Products Displex model CSA-202 helium refrigerator. Matrix gases were obtained from B.O.C. Ltd. (Research Grade), and the matrices were deposited by allowing the azide to sublime and condense on the cold window simultaneously with a large excess of the host gas. Matrix ratios could not be determined. Photolysis was carried out using an Oriel 200 W high pressure Hg arc, fitted with a quartz-windowed water-filter (λ ⪢ 200 nm). Pyrex (λ ⪢ 300 nm) and soda-glass (λ ⪢ 330 nm) filters were used as necessary. I.r. spectra were recorded on a Perkin Elmer model 684 spectrometer, interfaced with a Perkin Elmer model 3600 Data Station.
