For a microscopic local-density-approximation (LDA) foundation of the shell correction method (LDA-SCM) for metal clusters using the jellium approximation in connection with an extended Thomas-Fermi (ETF) LDA input density to a Harris-like functional, see Ref. 7. This LDA-SCM has been applied to multiply anionic metal clusters (Ref. 7) and to multiply charged fullerenes [C. Yannouleas and U. Landman, Chem. Phys. Lett. 217, 175 (1994)].
