20. The synthesis of polymers with mesogenic side groups normally requires a spacer to decouple mesogens and polymer chains by flexible segments. The direct attachment of a mesogenic group (without spacer) into the polymer backbone does not always lead to formation of liquid crystalline phase due to steric hindrances imposed by the main chain on the packing of the mesogenic groups. Both nematic and smetic phases were obtained in the present case even though the mesogen was directly attached to the polymer backbone.
