These curves agree qualitatively with those given in Fig. 7 of Ref. 10, where a rapidity cut | y | < 1.5 has been imposed on the produced particles.

This process was proposed in Refs. 8 and 10, where it is correctly stated that gluon fusion is negligible if there do not exist sufficiently heavy quarks.

Not all of the Feynman diagrams are shown. Figure 1(b) must be added to a diagram with the gluon lines crossed. Figure 1(c) is only one of six box diagrams which contribute to the amplitude. If the particle in the loop is a scalar quark, there are additional diagrams involving the quartic gluon–gluon–scalar-quark–anti-scalar-quark coupling.

It is interesting to note that C conservation (called Furry's theorem in this context) forbids the coupling of two gluons to a photon via quark and scalar-quark loops and to a Z boson via a scalar-quark loop. The only non-vanishing coupling of two gluons to a vector boson is due to the axial-vector coupling of the Z boson to quarks.

This agrees with Eq. (14) of Ref. 16, when we include a factor of 2 from inserting both left- and right-handed scalar quarks in the loop.

As an intermediate step in our calculation we have verified the result given in Eq. (19) of Ref. 16 for the large-mass limit of the box diagram with two vector and two scalar couplings.

A more precise statement of unitarity is that partial-wave amplitudes cannot grow at arbitrarily high energies. The amplitude derived from the interaction H+H-Fμν Fμν is pure s wave and grows like s hat, in violation of unitarity.

It is also possible that very heavy quarks could alter the spectrum of the standard model. We thank W. Fischler for bringing this point to our attention.

There are also loop diagrams involving the quartic H+H-ndashscalar-quark–anti-scalar-quark coupling, but these vanish in the large-mass limit.
