Although it is implicitly assumed20 that the conformation of the porphyrin skeleton is unaffected by the nature of the covalent linkage between imidazole and porphyrin, we would expect that at least some of the steric strain so induced in the Fe-N|m bond would be dissipated by conformational changes in the porphyrin skeleton.
