    • In the absence of tunneling, for a delta-like excitation pulse and assuming τLT is much longer than the exciton-formation time, Eqs. (1)–(3) become dn/dt =dp/dt= - Cn2= -dN/dt, giving n(t)=nex[1/(1+Cnext )], from which the exciton-formation time is obtained as defined.

    • For the sake of completeness, should be noted that in the case of the wide well of the narrow barrier sample, a tiny nonlinearity variation (gradient less than 1) should exist because the increase in the radiative emission of the narrow well with nex slightly deprives the wide well of carriers from the narrow well. However, the relative magnitude of the narrow and wide well PL shown in Fig. 4 indicates that even at the highest excitation densities, the overwhelming majority of the free carriers and excitonic carriers in the narrow well tunnel to the wide well before recombining and therefore the deviation from a gradient of 1 (less than 1%) is too small to be measured in the integrated luminescence measurement or using the cross-correlation technique.
