    • One might be tempted to make a self-consistent approximation by writing the diffusion equation in the frame of reference that is moving at the mean velocity v bar = {z bar} dot + vp, but this would be a mistake. The mean velocity v bar is defined by the average over all tip positions zi. Its use in the diffusion equation would, in effect, introduce an infinite-range interaction which would violate the quasi- stationarity approximation at the outset and cause difficulties in the stability analysis.
