    • With regard to the ideal trigonal bipyramid the equatorial O2–Sn–O3 angle of 88.2° for 3 is very small. It compares however with the corresponding small angles in four‐coordinate derivatives of sulfur (ca. 105°) and selenium (ca. 110°)

    • 2, which has an equatorial O‐Pb‐O angle of 89.5°:, unpublished results. All these angles may be understood as a result from a distortion of the trigonal bipyramidal geometry as effected by the lone pair. Alternatively, the coordination geometry with five approximately right angles as found for 3 may be explained to result alone from the use of p orbitals: Two of them enter two‐center/two‐electron bonds which are short, the third one gives rise to a three‐center/four‐electron bond which holds the other two ligand atoms at somewhat longer distances. This interpretation is advocated by H. H. Karsch. TU München, personal communication.
