We have checked that this 2D configuration cools and traps the atoms
-
We have checked that this 2D configuration cools and traps the atoms 7. We have characterized it with pump-probe spectroscopy, but the atoms escape the interaction region too quickly to allow diffusion measurements.

From previous simulations in the periodic lattices
-
From previous simulations in the periodic lattices 1316, we know that sometimes an atom escapes the lattice, acquiring a very high velocity, because of which the validity of the model is questionable. To avoid undesired divergences and to reproduce the experimental reality, we use an interaction region of 1 mm in diameter. If the atom reaches the border of this sphere, it is considered to be lost and its evolution is no longer evaluated.

These results are in strong contrast with those obtained from the numerical simulation of a periodic lattice created by four beams aligned along a regular tetrahedron. In that case, the temperature is anisotropic (by 20%) and the diffusion is isotropic

The authors of Ref
-
The authors of Ref. 10 have also measured a second and much shorter characteristic time (Formula presented) instead of (Formula presented) in the autocorrelation. This time is associated with a small fraction of delocalized atoms that should also contribute to the diffusion.
