Molecular or supramolecular templating: Defining the role of surfactant chemistry in the formation of microporous and mesoporous molecular sieves
-
Beck JS, Vartuli JC, Kennedy GJ, Kresge CT, Roth WJ, Schramm SE: Molecular or supramolecular templating: defining the role of surfactant chemistry in the formation of microporous and mesoporous molecular sieves. Chem Mater 1994, 6:1816-1821. The critical and essential role that surfactants play in defining the structure of the aluminosilicate formed was ascertained. High temperatures (> 100°C) or short carbon chains lead to single chain templates which give the more dense microporous solids, whereas longer chains and temperatures around 100°C lead to the aggregation of the amines and MCM mesoporous materials.

Salt-gel synthesis of porous transition metal oxides
-
Stein A, Fendorf M, Jarvie T, Mueller KT, Benesi AJ, Mallouk TE: Salt-gel synthesis of porous transition metal oxides. Chem Mater 1995, 7:304-313. This paper clearly shows that the transition metal oxide materials formed using liquid crystal templates are not extended three-dimensional structures like the aluminosilicates. Rather, the metal oxide forms clusters, akin to the well known Keggin clusters.

Hydrothermal synthesis of lithium and sodium manganese oxides and their metal ion extraction/insertion reactions
-
Feng Q, Kanoh H, Miyai Y, Ooi K: Hydrothermal synthesis of lithium and sodium manganese oxides and their metal ion extraction/insertion reactions. Chem Mater 1995, 7:1226-1232. An interesting paper that proposes a mechanism to explain the role of the interlayer manganese in ion-exchange reactions of manganates formed hydrothermally. Suggests that both ion-exchange and redox reactions occur simultaneously.
