Chem Mater 1994, 6:1816-1821. The critical and essential role that surfactants play in defining the structure of the aluminosilicate formed was ascertained. High temperatures (> 100°C) or short carbon chains lead to single chain templates which give the more dense microporous solids, whereas longer chains and temperatures around 100°C lead to the aggregation of the amines and MCM mesoporous materials.

    • Stein A, Fendorf M, Jarvie T, Mueller KT, Benesi AJ, Mallouk TE: Salt-gel synthesis of porous transition metal oxides. Chem Mater 1995, 7:304-313. This paper clearly shows that the transition metal oxide materials formed using liquid crystal templates are not extended three-dimensional structures like the aluminosilicates. Rather, the metal oxide forms clusters, akin to the well known Keggin clusters.
