    • Comparison of apparent monolayer thicknesses calculated from the XPS results (not shown) and the ellipsometric thicknesses (Table 1) suggests that the metal ions have a substantial effect on photoelectron attenuation. This intriguing phenomenon, which is beyond the scope of this paper, is currently being investigated.

    • These thicknesses are an average of results from three experiments. In all cases the thickness after bilayer reconstruction was somewhat higher than that of the original bilayer. Although the reason for this increase is not yet clear, it may suggest better organization after reconstruction.

    • Coordination-based multilayers were formed by stepwise assembly with tetrahydroxamates as repeat units. Multilayers comprising up to 20 layers were obtained; preliminary characterization (by electron diffraction and scanning probe techniques) suggests a high degree of order.
