The effect of the microenvironment of the host adsorbents on the photochemical properties of the guest molecules in restricted void spaces has been clarified. The changes in zeolite cavities, modified by the exchange of cations, have a significant effect on the excited states and chemical reactions of ketones.

2-coated surfaces. Thus, in practical terms, through photocatalytic coatings, it becomes possible to maintain clean windows or windshields, strip finger marks off walls, reduce the density of colonies of microorganisms on hospital walls, and oxidatively strip oil sheens off water. Commercial products having photocatalytically active surfaces are now entering the market.

2 photocatalysts implanted with Cr ions by an ion-implantation method and their application for photocatalytic reactions under visible light at 275K. Nature 1996, in press. To establish clean and safe photocatalysis using the most chemically and environmentally ideal energy source, solar light, it is vital to develop photocatalysts which can operate under visible light. The application of the metal ion-implantation method successfully enables the unprecedented design of 'second-generation titanium dioxide photocatalysts' which can absorb visible light and operate under visible-light irradiation.
