    • Women swam up to 3 km to offshore islands to collect muttonbirds, according to the observations in the 1830s and the rafts may have remained afloat for several hours of travel, according to Jones, R., Tasmania: aquatic machines and offshore islands. In: Problems and Economic and Social Archaeology (edited by G. de G. Sieveking, I. H. Longworth and K. E. Wilson). London: Duckworth, 1977: 235-263. By these means the nearer northwest islands (Robbins, Hunter and Three Hummocks) were accessible from the mainland, but King island and the Furneaux Group were inaccessible and uninhabited by the mid-Holocene.
