    • note
    • This precursor pulse composition is an effective compromise over a neat HI expansion and an expansion of HI in high dilution in a light carrier gas. The former case would provide the highest H atom yield/pulse, while the later case would provide both high terminal jet velocity, which is necessary to exclude cofragmenl I atoms from striking the crystal, and the dominant presence of a collision partner for H atoms of similar mass, thereby best equalizing angular and energy relaxation probabilities.

    • note
    • 39While the D atom exposure for the as-prepared surface is in the saturation regime, thereby implying preparation of a 1.0 ML monodeuteride adlayer (see Sec. III A), the observation of a 10%-15% hydrogen coverage increase with hyperthermal H atom exposure may suggest that the monolayer on the as-prepared surface is not complete. A decrease in the assumed as-prepared coverage of 10%-15% would result in a nominally 10%-15% decrease in the calculated value of the absolute D atom depletion probability; this level of uncertainty is insignificant given the statistical uncertainty associated with the D atom depletion probability.
