    • Many of the static models in [3] make use of stress-absorbing edge conditions, which do not allow for the inward diffusion of stress into the lattice from the parts of the fault outside it. The free edge as in [2] is a reflector of stress and hence, by virtue of imaging, simulates an infinite fault with correlations, as does our assumption of periodic boundary conditions. More important is the question whether ``runaways,'' i.e., events whose lengths are equal to the lattice size, can appear on either the finite or the (imaged) infinite lattice. By the imaging argument, runaways create an undesirable, infinitely long fracture.
