    • Free radical action spectra were obtained from ESR measurements of the second-order radical decay kinetics following excitation of melanins at various wavelengths. The rate of radical production is proportional to the square of the radical concentration. The action spectra for oxygen consumption were compiled by measuring changes in the superhyperfine structure of the Mi = +l transition for a nitroxide spin probe. Both radical production and oxygen consumption measurements were corrected by photon fluence rates; see the following. Sarna, T.; Sealy, R. C. Arch. Biochem. Biophys. 1984, 232, 574-578.
