    • This is inferred from similar work looking for changes in the Cu core-level when monolayers of various other metals on Cu(100) were saturated with CO. In general, there is at least an order-of-magnitude decrease in the size of the Cu core-level shift induced on a Cu atom which is one atomic site away from the atom to which the CO is bonded [W.F. Egelhoff Jr., unpublished results]. This result seems reasonable in view of the short distances over which disturbances are screened out in metals.
