17. 2 has a UV spectrum very similar to that of 1, however, and consequently the inner filter effect gives rise to an exponential decay of 1. That is, as the reaction proceeds a smaller fraction of the light is being absorbed by 1, and hence its rate of decay slows.

Trimethylphosphine was not used for this study in order to eliminate any effects that changes in the UV-vis spectra of the substituted complexes (A and/or ε) might introduce into the kinetics of the reaction mechanism due to changes in the amount of light absorbed during the reaction.
