Flammarion, Paris, see Book III, Chap. III, Sec. III. After having written the appendix, we became aware of a posthumous work of Poincaré [Bull. Astron., Tome XVII (1953), Fasc. 2, pp. 121-269] in which he discusses, among several other possible deviations from Newton’s gravity, various bounds on &δmacr(formula presented). In particular, on pp. 181-184, he updates the “parallactic” Laplace limit by admitting an uncertainty on (formula presented) of 0 arcsec 04. However, he wrongly follows Laplace in not taking into account the factor 3/5×(formula presented)(m)/(formula presented)(m). Moreover, he makes a numerical mistake in computing the limit on &δmacr(formula presented). Because of a compensation between his errors, the final value he quotes, |&δmacr(formula presented)|<2×(formula presented), is not very far from the one he should have quoted, namely (see end of Appendix D), |&δmacr(formula presented)|<(0.04/0.08)×3.4×(formula presented)=1.7×(formula presented
