    • In this argument is tacitly assumed that there is no other conservation law preventing relaxation of the current. For example, in the case of noninteracting electrons in a periodic potential, neither the current nor the momentum is conserved by the Hamiltonian, but a state of finite current will not decay. We cannot rigorously rule out the possibility that in other less trivial models a subtle symmetry may prevent the decay of a current, although this possibility seems physically implausible.
