Continuing this analogy, the excited heterodimer in the single mutants would be expected to have a second (or higher) excited singlet state (D*) having a composition more comparable to that of P*. However, this nomenclature becomes more cumbersome when comparing the results on the heterodimer single and double mutants since the composition of the lowest excited state may change. Therefore, in this paper the lowest excited singlet state of the heterodimer in both the single and double mutant will be designated D*.
