    • The term "reflection-absorption spectroscopy (RAS)", which is defined by Greenler [Greenler, R. G.; Rahn, R. R.; Schwartz, J. P. J. Catal. 1971, 23, 42] to refer specifically to the method of obtaining the spectrum of a thin layer of material located on the highly reflecting surface of a metal, is often misused to denote the external reflection spectroscopy of monolayers on the water surface. In the latter system, reflection bands frequently have negative reflection absorbances and represent increased reflectivities (emission) rather than absorption relative to the baseline. The misuse is strongly discouraged.
